What Does XR Mean in Biofinity Toric XR and Who Needs Extended Range Toric Lenses?
XR in Biofinity Toric XR stands for Extended Range — referring specifically to the extended cylinder (astigmatism correction) power range this lens offers beyond what standard Biofinity Toric provides.
Understanding Cylinder Range in Toric Lenses
Toric contact lenses correct astigmatism using a cylinder power (CYL) parameter. Standard toric lenses — including Biofinity Toric — cover cylinder powers up to approximately -2.25D, addressing mild to moderate astigmatism. Wearers with higher degrees of astigmatism requiring cylinder powers beyond this range historically had to rely exclusively on spectacles. Biofinity Toric XR was developed to extend the available cylinder range for this group.
Available Cylinder Range
| Lens | Cylinder Range | Sphere Range |
|---|---|---|
| Biofinity Toric (standard) | -0.75D to -2.25D | +4.00D to -8.00D |
| Biofinity Toric XR | -2.25D to -5.75D (0.50D steps) | +6.00D to -10.00D |
Important Note
Biofinity Toric XR and Biofinity XR are different products. Biofinity XR is the extended range version of the standard (non-toric) Biofinity lens for high sphere-only prescriptions. Biofinity Toric XR corrects both sphere and high cylinder together. Always confirm with your eye care professional that your prescription falls within the Biofinity Toric XR parameter range before ordering.
