How Does Smart Silicone™ Technology Work in CooperVision MyDay Daily Contact Lenses?
Smart Silicone™ technology is the material innovation at the core of CooperVision MyDay daily contact lenses. It enables MyDay to deliver high oxygen transmissibility alongside natural, coating-free comfort — two properties that have historically been difficult to achieve simultaneously in a silicone hydrogel lens.
The Core Challenge of Silicone Hydrogel Materials
Silicone is one of the most oxygen-permeable materials available for contact lens manufacturing — but it is inherently hydrophobic: it repels water, making unmodified silicone hydrogel uncomfortable on the eye. Most silicone hydrogel lenses address this by adding a surface coating or internal wetting agent. These approaches work, but coatings can degrade over the wear period and wetting agents can deplete. Smart Silicone™ technology takes a fundamentally different approach.
How Smart Silicone™ Technology Works
Smart Silicone™ technology is a proprietary process in which the silicone components of the Stenfilcon A material are modified at the molecular level to make them inherently water-compatible — amphiphilic (compatible with both water and the surrounding lens matrix) throughout the material. Rather than masking hydrophobicity with a coating, Smart Silicone™ changes the fundamental character of the silicone chains themselves.
Combined with Aquaform® Technology ensuring water molecules are bound throughout the material matrix, the result is a lens where the silicone delivers a Dk/t of 100 and the material surface is naturally wettable without a coating — maintaining consistent comfort properties for the full daily wear period. Because the wettability comes from the material itself, it cannot degrade through blinking, handling, or cleaning.
