How Does SMARTSURFACE® Technology Work in Alcon Precision1 Daily Contact Lenses?

SMARTSURFACE® Technology is the moisture innovation built into Alcon Precision1 daily contact lenses — and it is the key reason these lenses maintain comfort throughout the day despite the moderate water content of their core material.

The Challenge It Addresses

Higher water content in a lens core feels initially comfortable but creates a problem: high-water-content materials lose moisture progressively throughout the wear day as the tear film evaporates. Standard surface coatings can create a hydrophilic outer layer initially — but coatings applied to the lens surface degrade through blinking and handling. SMARTSURFACE® Technology takes a different approach entirely.

How SMARTSURFACE® Technology Works

SMARTSURFACE® Technology creates a high-moisture outer surface layer — with water content exceeding 80% — that is integrated into the Verofilcon A material rather than applied as a separate coating. The outer surface of the Precision1 lens transitions from a structured silicone hydrogel core (which provides structural stability and oxygen permeability) to a soft, water-rich outer layer that interfaces directly with the tear film and the eye.

This means the outer surface — the portion in direct contact with the eye — maintains over 80% moisture content throughout the wear day. Because it is part of the material itself rather than a coating, it cannot degrade and maintains its properties for the full daily wear period.

The Practical Result

The SMARTSURFACE® outer layer creates a consistent, lubricious, hydrated lens surface that supports comfortable vision and stable tear film interaction throughout up to 16 hours of daily wear. Consult your eye care professional to confirm whether Precision1 is appropriate for your prescription.
